History
of Brod-Dugan
Harold J. Brod, co-founder of
the Brod-Dugan paint and wallpaper retail chain, died Tuesday (April 23, 1996)
at his home in Westwood of complications from a variety of illnesses. He was
83. ??Mr. Brod came to this country from Russia in 1924 as a 12-year-old. The
family settled in Philadelphia, where Mr. Brod began his career at age 19 as a
traveling salesman for a paint company. ??A new job took him to a company in
Chicago, which sent him to St. Louis in 1935. Here, while making his sales
calls, he met Nat Dugan. In 1946, the two of them opened the first Brod-Dugan
paint store, on North Kingshighway. ??With the success of that business, other
stores followed. The company operated 13 stores in the St. Louis area It
manufactured its own paint at a plant in Maryland Heights. In its 50 years of
business, the company became a leading supplier to contractors. ??In 1973, Mr.
Brod bought out the Dugan family interest, and his partner died several years
ago. Mr. Robert “Bob” Brod died at he age of 63. Bob stqrted working as a youth for his father. The company
in 1996 was sold to The Sherwin-Williams Company.
