Faux-Combing

Combing is a fun technique that creates a striated effect with paint and glaze.

Traditional combing produces vertical lines that mimic the sheen of opulent silk.

1. Mask ceilings, baseboards, and trim.  Paint the wall with the desired basecoat color and allow to completely dry. (if you can allow overnight it would be best)

2.  Mix one part of latex satin to five parts of faux finish glaze.  Begin in one corner of the wall and roll your glaze coat on the entire height of the wall approximately three feet.  This will allow ample time to work before the glaze begins to dry.

3. Lightly drag a dry comb or wallpaper brush though the wet glaze in one continuous stroke from ceiling to floor.  Apply even pressure and keep the tool tilted toward to to produce a streaked appearance.  Wipe excess glaze from your tool after each  stroke to maintain a clean edge.  Repeat steps 2 and 3 as you work along the entire wall.

Tip: Stop dragging a few inches from the outside edge of your glaze coat as you work.  This allows you to overlap your next three-foot wide glaze coat for a smoth transition.
