Many people ask why do we recommend certain
paints? The answer is naturally from experience and our own experience in
clean up which I will explain at the end.
We have found over the years that
Sherwin-Williams offers two great trim paints
Brod-Dugan
which was a company that Sherwin-Williams purchased based in St. Louis had a
product Acrylastic which is 100% acrylic and has its' own sheen which is
similar to a semi-gloss and covers excellent. This paint is used both for
interior and exterior.
This
year we have used Acrylastic as a body paint with the greatest pride in
the results on the homes we painted. Our standard has been using Porter
Acri-Shield 100% latex acrylic paint for our exterior finishes and the
Acrylastic for the trim.
Sherwin-Williams'
ProClassic interior, which cost more to us that the Acrylastic
does an excellent job as well. The ProClassic comes in latex
and oil and is probably the very best oil paint we have used in years for trim.
Porter
offer Advantage 900 which is also a top of the line trim paint, but we have not
taken the time to master the application of this paint. Yes, certain
paints need experience in applying them to get the best results. This is
another reason why you should choose a professional painting company.
We are using one latex ceiling paint.
Sherwin-Williams
this year purchased MAB Paints which had several hundred stores. They
continue to offer the Fresh Coat products from MAB. It is our standard
to use the MAB Fresh Coat for all ceilings in flat white. The paint is
great! It covers the ceilings in a single coat going in one direction
even on sanded finish ceilings. It has great body and vibrancy!
We have been using two latex wall paints.
Home
Depot or Glidden Professional offer the Glidden Professional paint in
various sheens. The vibrancy of this paint is excellent in the eggshell
finish we we recommend. The coverage is beautiful. Two coats of this
paint gives a wonderful united smooth finish in the beiges and middle colors.
Porter
offers a top of the line product Silken Touch our results are the
same as Glidden Professional. We prefer the Porter Product because of our
relationship with Porter and the support, which they offer us.
When we are called upon for accent colors
such as dark Reds, Burgundy, Dark Browns, and Rich Blues we study the color
before we consider the paint products we will recommend and use. If we
wish to do two coats we can get excellent results using Benjamin Moore Aura
paint. If we wish to use a primer or flat sheen of the color before the
top coat we like ICI Glidden Deep Base. Again if we think we can
get two coats to work we will use Behr Premium. In some cases, Valspar
has some mauve colors for which, only they have a mauve base for making the
color and we use Valspar. Sherwin Williams as a line of accent bases
which for some colors are outstanding.
There is more than just purchasing paint; there
are relationships and support which professional painters seek. We have
found both for our company from Porter and Sherwin-Williams.
How after painting do we know we used an
excellent paint?
When
we clean the 5 gallon buckets that we rolled out of there is a film left on the
dried part of the bucket. We we go to cleanup we can personally feel
how much millage we applied. People talk about two coats of
paint...it is not the number of coats it is the coverage of the paint.
You must remember that colors that take a lot of pigments tend to
separate and one coat will not cover and many times the paint when rolled will
splatter or "spit" and one must protect the floors and trim. It
isn't the thickness of the nap used on the roller that will control this
spitting; it is the pigments. Some pigments will not join other pigments
and thus there can be coverage problems and consistence of paint.
If
you are purchasing several cans of the same color, please mix them together prior
to painting as one can may be slightly different.
